Cabo Real Plans Four New Holes and a Short Course in Private-Club Conversion

Cabo Real is rebuilding parts of its Robert Trent Jones II golf course in Los Cabos, Mexico, with RTJ II overseeing the renovation. The course is expected to reopen in late 2027 as a members-only club, ending its 32-year run as a resort course.

New routing and practice facilities

Four holes will be newly built: Nos. 1, 7, 8 and 9. The revised layout will start at the new clubhouse and return alongside it at the signature finishing hole. All 18 holes will receive work on their greens and bunkers.

Beyond those changes, the project calls for new grass on the playing surfaces, an irrigation upgrade, resurfaced cart paths and four new comfort stations. RTJ II has also designed a five-hole short course, with panoramic Pacific Ocean views on each hole. Practice facilities will include a driving range usable from both ends, along with separate putting and chipping greens.

The developer's October 2026 announcement dates the original course's completion to 1994 and says Jones designed the layout on horseback. Jones recalled scouting through arroyos, with the Sea of Cortez visible in the distance from every hole. He said the renovation would retain the original vision while improving playability, strategy and enjoyment for members.

Property ownership and club access

The golf conversion is part of Cabo Real's development as a private residential and lifestyle community. Only real estate owners can become members, and club amenities are restricted to members and their invited guests. Graham Culp, managing partner at Meriwether Companies, said the golf renovation is intended to complement the community's other amenities and reflect its setting.

Meriwether Companies is developing Cabo Real with Grupo Questro and Clubs Desarrolla, which the developer's October 2026 release describes as longtime stewards of the land. According to that announcement, contracted real estate sales have exceeded $200 million. Completion of the first homes is expected by May 2027.

Surf Park Guide places Cabo Real Surf Club within the established 3,000-acre Cabo Real masterplan, about 20 minutes from the international airport.

The developer lists custom Estate Lots, Boardwalk Homesites and ocean-view Villas among the available properties, with prices starting at US$1.5 million. The turnkey Surf Casitas designed by Mexico City-based Sordo Madaleno are fully reserved, according to the October announcement.

Wave basin targets December opening

The golf work is underway as Cabo Real prepares to open its Endless Surf wave basin in December 2026. The developer describes the four-acre facility as the first Endless Surf basin in North America. Using the company's ES48 technology, it can produce 240 customizable waves an hour, with rides lasting up to 25 seconds and adjustable wave heights reaching seven feet, according to the developer.

Filling began in September 2026, Surf Park Guide reported in its October profile. The process was expected to take 30 to 40 days, drawing water from a desalination plant built specifically for the development.

An adjacent Surf Club is expected to follow in early 2027. The developer says it will offer a resort pool, areas for watching surfers, food and beverage service, and surf retail.
