Baja California Sur Begins Daily Dengue Monitoring, Plans Fever Clinic

Health authorities in Baja California Sur have launched daily remote check-ins for dengue patients and are preparing a fever clinic at Ciudad Constitución's General Hospital this week as transmission continues in Ciudad Constitución and Cabo San Lucas.

Follow-up targets patients at risk of complications

The state Health Department and Mexico's National Public Health Service, known as SNSP, began the monitoring program this week for patients diagnosed with dengue at public health institutions. According to the state government, it prioritizes people whose age or underlying conditions put them at greater risk of complications.

A text message or app notification prompts patients to complete a brief symptom questionnaire. When their responses reveal warning signs, health workers can coordinate hospital transportation through SAMU, the state's emergency medical response system.

Health Secretary Ana Luisa Guluarte Castro said dengue patients occupy less than 6 percent of available beds in the state's public health system. She cautioned that the illness often becomes most dangerous in the 24 to 48 hours after the fever subsides, the period on which the check-ins concentrate.

State tally reaches 418 cases

The state Health Secretariat's report for epidemiological week 42, covering October 18-24, 2026, put the year's confirmed dengue total at 418 cases and four deaths, according to POSTA México. The classifications included 165 non-severe cases, 230 cases with warning signs and 23 severe cases.

Los Cabos accounted for 178 cases and three deaths, while Comondú recorded 122 cases and one death. La Paz had 113 cases and no deaths; Loreto reported five cases, and Mulegé had none.

An earlier snapshot, for epidemiological week 40, showed 325 confirmed cases, compared with 176 at the same point in 2025, Semanario ZETA reported. That represented an increase of 84.66 percent. The week 40 total comprised 121 non-severe cases, up 59 percent year over year; 183 cases with warning signs, up 108 percent; and 21 severe cases, up 75 percent.

At that point, Baja California Sur had the country's second-highest dengue incidence, at 35.26 cases per 100,000 residents, behind Sonora's 51.35, according to Semanario ZETA. Its severe-dengue rate of 2.28 per 100,000 was the highest nationally.

The same outlet reported that 213 of the 325 cases involved the DENV-3 serotype and that the state had been placed on yellow alert. DENV-3 is associated with a greater risk of severe or hemorrhagic illness, especially among people previously infected with a different serotype.

Additional care in Ciudad Constitución

The fever clinic is being established with state Health Department support for IMSS Bienestar, the federal program serving uninsured residents. Plans call for the immediate hiring of more doctors and nurses to staff the clinic at the General Hospital of Ciudad Constitución and provide supportive care for dengue symptoms.

The city's urban health center will also offer 12 hours of service on Saturdays and Sundays to meet demand during active transmission. Those weekend hours are intended to shorten the wait for diagnosis. Meanwhile, the state is supplying rapid dengue tests to facilities operated by IMSS Bienestar, IMSS and ISSSTE.

Officials identify Ciudad Constitución and Cabo San Lucas as the areas with the most active transmission. They advise people there who have fever and dengue symptoms to seek assessment at a public hospital or health center without waiting for their condition to deteriorate.

For people recovering at home, officials warn that bleeding gums or nose, blood in urine or stool, persistent vomiting, extreme weakness, lethargy, reduced urination and severe abdominal pain require immediate medical attention. There is no medication that specifically cures dengue; care focuses on relieving symptoms and detecting complications.

Authorities have not given a date for scaling back either the daily follow-up program or the fever clinic.

Spraying, cleanup and Wolbachia efforts

The new patient services add to a response that has included health worker training and mosquito-control campaigns. CENAPRECE, the federal disease-control center, is sending additional fumigation equipment and insecticide to the Ciudad Constitución area.

Comondú's municipal government has committed to starting neighborhood cleanups this week, removing debris and containers where mosquitoes can breed. Officials are also asking residents to drain standing water around their homes: spraying kills adult mosquitoes, but not larvae.

Statewide, more than 23,000 hectares had been fumigated by mid-September 2026, according to the state government. About 53 percent of that area was in La Paz and 28 percent in Los Cabos. Spraying started in August, before the period when dengue incidence has historically increased.

The state Health Secretariat says its Wolbachia program is also continuing in urban parts of Cabo San Lucas and La Paz. Repopulation work under that program aims to reduce mosquitoes' ability to transmit the virus.

Mexico's national dengue figures

Across Mexico, the federal Health Secretariat recorded 8,047 confirmed dengue cases and 33 deaths through the epidemiological week ending October 19, 2026, according to its dengue report as cited by Excélsior.

Sonora led the case count with 1,862, followed by Veracruz with 1,295, Tabasco with 777, Sinaloa with 683 and Quintana Roo with 468. DENV-3 was the most widely circulating serotype across the 30 affected states.
