Gabby Thomas Shares How She Celebrated After Rain Ruined Her Wedding Reception

Gabby Thomas and Spencer McManes lost their outdoor wedding reception setup to a storm in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, but celebrated inside a ballroom. Sharing footage afterward, the Olympic sprinter said the damage never overshadowed the day.

A storm outside, dancing inside

Thomas revealed the rain-soaked scene in a Nov. 5 Instagram Reel following the couple's Oct. 30, 2026, wedding. Water battered tables dressed in white linens and set with black and gold place settings. Her caption read, "When your entire wedding reception gets destroyed minutes before it starts."

The video then showed the 29-year-old dancing indoors with McManes and their loved ones. "But it doesn't cross your mind once all night," she wrote, followed by, "Because you had the best day of your life."

In another wedding video posted that day, Thomas explained her approach: "Gave up on perfection and focused on being in the moment together."

Thomas won three gold medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics, finishing first in the 200m dash, 4x100m relay and 4x400m relay, according to Sports Illustrated.

The rain cleared for their vows

The couple held their beach ceremony at Garza Blanca Resort & Spa, a venue they booked before either had visited Cabo, according to Vogue. While the storm spoiled the reception setup, Thomas said the weather briefly cooperated for their vows.

"It had been raining all day," she told Vogue in an interview published Nov. 5. "But right as our ceremony began, the rain cleared, and a vibrant rainbow appeared behind us just as I reached the altar."

Her parents accompanied her down the aisle, and her grandfather officiated the ceremony on the sand. Wearing a corseted white lace gown, Thomas described herself as "grateful, excited, and completely anchored" and said she felt "overwhelmed with love."

Her ceremony dress was one of three custom Galia Lahav looks, with others for the reception and after-party, Vogue reported. The bridesmaids wore honey-beige dresses from Austin-based Revelry. McManes gave his groomsmen bolo ties rather than bow ties, incorporating an heirloom element passed down from his great-grandfather.

Reflecting on the celebration, Thomas told Vogue, "I feel like the luckiest person in the world." She added, "Not just because rain is good luck, but because the people in that room made it the best day of our lives. There wasn't a single second where we weren't smiling, dancing, or celebrating. We're just so grateful."

Her Nov. 6 Instagram photo post carried a shorter tribute: "The most beautiful day with the love of my life. 10.30.26 forever & always."

From an Austin first date to Cabo

Thomas and McManes began dating in 2022. According to Vogue, McManes, who founded the non-alcoholic beverage brand Kaviva, messaged Thomas after she followed him back on Instagram. Their first date took place at a downtown Austin speakeasy, and the couple calls Austin, Texas, home.

In March 2025, McManes proposed on a rooftop overlooking Austin. Vogue reported that he arranged the occasion as a staycation celebrating the start of Thomas' track season.

Before the Cabo ceremony, Thomas shared an Oct. 26, 2026, Instagram announcement captioned "Mr. & Mrs. McManes," with photos outside the Travis County Courthouse, according to Sports Illustrated.

Other newlyweds mark the year

Thomas and McManes join other couples who married in 2026, including Dove Cameron and Damiano David, who wed Sept. 24 in Montalcino, Italy, and Simu Liu and Allison Hsu, whose wedding took place Oct. 3 in France.

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce married July 3 at Madison Square Garden. A press release issued on their behalf said the celebration included 1,000 guests, with Adam Sandler officiating. Both wore custom Dior outfits designed by Jonathan Anderson.

Kelce discussed the holidays on Nov. 5 while promoting Tommy Hilfiger's winter 2026 holiday campaign. "I'm excited for my first holiday as a married man," he told WWD, according to E! News. "I love all the old traditions and can't wait to start some new ones." He also said, "I start celebrating as that tree goes up."

During a September 2026 conversation with ESPN's Chris Berman, Kelce called the wedding "the best night of my life," E! News reported. "Marrying Taylor was more than I could have ever dreamed it to be," he said.
