Power failures keep about 100 Punta Chueca students out of classrooms

Electricity problems have kept about 100 children from attending Benito Juárez Elementary School in person for more than four weeks, REFORMA reported. The school in Punta Chueca, Hermosillo, serves the Indigenous Comca'ac (Seri) community.

School substation awaits connection

The disruption dates to the beginning of the 2026-2027 school year. Without power, the school has been unable to run its air conditioners or drinking-water pump, and its restrooms are unusable.

Daniel Moroyoqui, a school community representative, said the electrical system has suffered failures for two years. Summer repairs did not resolve the problem: switching on the classroom cooling equipment overloaded the system again and damaged the main meter, he said.

Sonora's Secretariat of Education and Culture (SEC) said a substation is already installed at the school but cannot begin operating until the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) finishes technical work beyond the campus and connects it to the grid.

Earlier electricity and water investments

The school outage follows an electrification project in Punta Chueca under the federal Programa de Justicia Energética. In a CFE statement covered by Milenio on August 9, 2026, the utility reported bringing electricity to the Seri community of 692 residents through work carried out from June 2023 through January 2024.

That project involved 4.35 kilometers of overhead medium-voltage lines, 92 poles, 173 meter mounting walls and 23 transformers. Funding totaled 9.5 million pesos from the Fondo de Servicio Universal Energético (FSUE).

CFE reported in August 2026 that it had electrified 707 of the program's 8,247 targeted localities. The program aims to reach all of them by the end of 2028; the government's nationwide goal is electricity access for 99.99% of the population in 2028.

Punta Chueca has also received new water infrastructure. According to InfoCajeme, President Claudia Sheinbaum and Sonora Governor Alfonso Durazo inaugurated the Acueducto Seri there on May 8, 2026. The 78.7-kilometer aqueduct, part of the Plan de Justicia Seri-Comca'ac, cost more than 208 million pesos and provides permanent potable water for the first time to more than 1,000 residents of Punta Chueca and Desemboque. At the school, however, the electrical failure has stopped the pump from operating.

Families say assignments cannot replace attendance

While the school waits for power, teachers are providing weekly distance learning with backing from school supervisors and the sector directorate. Parents and guardians say the arrangement is ineffective in their community, harms academic performance and makes it harder to manage family work schedules.

Úrsula Sefic, whose child attends the school, said a similar disruption occurred during the 2025-2026 school year. She said students are falling behind in their subjects and that take-home work neither substitutes for classroom instruction nor preserves their school routines.

Community accounts describe irregular attendance during the previous school year and the cancellation of the graduation ceremony because of the same problems. Families have asked the SEC and CFE to expedite the unfinished work so electricity and water pumping can resume.
